Creative Voices in Birmingham!
Creative Voices, our national forum for the people we support, gathered in Birmingham this December to discuss the organisation’s progress, share ideas for 2025, and spread some festive cheer.
The event opened with a welcome from Grace Garrattley, Service Manager for Birmingham hubs, and Fiona King, Chair of Quality on our Board of Trustees. Fiona addressed the group, emphasising the importance of Creative Voices in shaping the organisation’s strategy:
“Over the last 3–4 years, I’ve seen Creative Voices really develop and gain momentum. I can see some familiar faces here this morning, and it’s great to see some new ones too. From the Board’s perspective, this event helps us understand what matters to you and what we need to be aware of. That’s why I wanted to come in person – to hear directly from you. I look forward to your thoughts and ideas.”
The forum discussed our recently revised Mission Statement which you can find here on our website. Grace explained, “Today is about getting your comments and thoughts. We’re asking: Can you say yes to the different ‘I’ statements in our Mission Statements?”
Joolz Casey, our Chair of the Board, reflected on the importance of Creative Voices and the ‘I’ statements:
“When it comes to the ‘I’ statements, I’ve been keen to push further, thinking about what an even better life could look like for each individual. Today, we want to listen to you and incorporate your feedback into the organisation’s overall strategy.”
Attendees then participated in an ‘I’ statements forum and shared their ideas for improving services. Suggestions were made regarding topics such as maintenance services and the creation of new clubs, with the most popular idea being more drop-in sessions for socialising and activities at local hubs.
Charlotte, who we support in the Midlands, gave a heart-warming presentation showcasing her experiences through joyful photos with her friends:
“I live in a place that provides care for those with various needs. We have a fantastic time, accessing a range of activities from outdoor sports to shopping. Everyone there is encouraged to think about what they’d like to achieve. We feel supported to reach our goals.”
Next, Sven from the North East spoke about his passion for football: “Where I live, I’m heavily involved in football. I’ve got two matches coming up, and it’s absolutely fantastic. At 72 years old, I didn’t think I’d still be able to do all that, but I can.”
The event included lots of festive activities, from designing snowflake baubles to writing poems about reaching our potential, providing an opportunity to connect with others and enjoy the festive season together as a creative community.
Creative Voices meets three times a year and offers a chance to connect, share ideas, and celebrate achievements. Next year, the forum plans to meet in North Yorkshire in the spring, Telford in the summer, and Manchester in the autumn, focusing on the themes of growth, gardening, and nature.
