London’s Sporty Summer
Five services across Tower Hamlets in London joined forces to compete in a friendly sports day event, spread through the common room of the service and outside in the garden! The group used their Sporty Summer ‘Get Together’ grant of up to £300 to deck the service out in activities to keep everyone busy all afternoon.
Eccentric, who we support in London, was certainly in their element organising the event as they had previously worked as a disability sports coach! They planned a well thought out scoring system so that each activity was worth a different amount of points, to accurately determine who would be the winner of today’s competition.
Among the stations to take part in were darts, skittles, bean bag throw, football and ping pong. Eccentric had made sure each activity was an inclusive as possible, for example footballs fitted with bells for people with visual impairments. Lula, an activity organiser at the service, clapped her hands by the target so people knew where to throw the bean bag.
The sun was shining the whole day, meaning people could enjoy their hotdogs and picnic food outside in true summer-style.
After lunch it was time to tot up the scores and announce the winners, handing out first, second and third place medals. Everyone won a certificate for their participation efforts, as they really put their all in to make it a successful day. Congratulations to Maria, who won two certificates!
